Hello summer swelter!
And yesterday a storm zoomed in to ruin the beautiful shady nest Miss Okra the oss-cross made for her pigs below….
We had to shut down the tunnel house completely in the 95-degree heat…the greenhouse too, so the wind can’t get in and rip the plastic off and bend the rings after all the hard work of putting the darn things up! So when the storm passed, we got out there and opened them up. It is amazing to just sit and watch and be somewhat helpless, but even worse to be racing home and be too late. ahhh farming….
Our Molly, the summer worker bee is back and we are all rejoicing, especially the pigs and dogs whom she dotes on more than we seem to be able to. After a hot day of harvesting, she and Alena and I went off to a Farm dinner called Porkapolooza with Stuart and Alice of Bluebird Meadows at Fosters Market in Chapel Hill. It was a great time, and I enjoyed seeing everyone, though I wish our promotion of it had been better. ahhh farming….
At the markets, and yes, for a third week in a row, we are doing all three on Saturday. We will have some lamb, lots of pork, and small whole turkeys. As for the veggies, they are humming along and will be in abundance including cabbage, garlic, onions, chard, radishes, sugar snaps, potatoes, cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes and kale. Greensboro and Sax people please email your requests…
See you at the markets!
